‘From the Rough’ would like to feature Profiles of any North West Golf Club Personnel over the winter months and our first profile is of Michelle Huzzey.
Greenkeeping is a predominantly male dominated occupation in Australia and Tasmania but Michelle Huzzey breaks this trend in her role as Course Superintendent at the Wynyard Golf Club.
Michelle had always been interested in horticulture as her father Martin Huzzey taught this subject at the Burnie TAFE College. She completed a one year horticultural course prior to starting a one year traineeship, working with Burnie Golf Club Superintendent Greg Duff. Then followed four years as an apprentice to qualify with a Certificate 1V in Turf Management after which she gained a part time position at the Wynyard Golf Club. She later took over the permanent position and has worked at the club for nearly eighteen years.
Michelle combines her busy role on the course with that of being mother to a seven year old son and a nearly four year old daughter.
Michelle is the only female golf superintendent in Tasmania and has generally found herself quite well accepted by both club members and other course staff. She also finds this is the situation at state meetings for superintendents and greenkeeper staff and she finds the information shared most interesting and helpful to her role.
When she first began working as a seventeen year old, Michelle realised she did not have enough strength for a few tasks, such as hooking up a hydraulic hose under pressure, but she slowly overcame these minor setbacks with time and practice to manage all tasks easily.
Keeping the course greens in good condition is somewhat of an obsession with Michelle, despite the usual challenges of renovations, weeds, insects, etc. As she is the only paid course staff member at Wynyard, she is most appreciative of the assistance given by a small group of trained volunteer members who also keep the course mown and maintained during her holidays.
Currently the club is looking at increased water storage and fairway irrigation which would make Michelle’s role a lot easier in the summer months when watering is managed by movable hoses and sprinklers.
Michelle would encourage other women interested in golf course greenkeeping to try this role.
