From the Rough

Last Sunday saw the conclusion of the 2019 Battlescares Charity Golf Tournament run over four rounds on four different golf courses. The event was a single stableford and fiftyfour different players from all over Northern and North West Tasmania participated for this very worthy cause.

Sunday’s event held at Quamby Golf Club saw forty seven players tee off and some great scores were returned. There was a four way tie for first place on 41 points. Jack Blair from Launceston Golf Club won the count back from Geoff Johnstone, Daniel Templeton and Bowen Keene. The lowest score of the day (which has become a tradition to announce) was NWTCA leading wicket taker Craig Boucher. Organiser Mark Astell said in jest “Clearly being a good cricketer doesn’t automatically translate across to golf”. Craig scored 20 points on the day.

The overall winner of the four round event, after dropping his worst round, was Longford Golf Club’s Geoff Johnstone with a total score of 117 points. He narrowly beat Daniel Templeton by one point scoring 116 points. In third place on 114 points was Phillip Gardam. For his efforts Geoff won a great prize of two tickets to the Saturday and Sunday of the Presidents Cup being held in Melbourne in December 2019, as well as two nights’ accommodation and return airfares from Launceston. Geoff Hicks and Shane Wootton tied for the lowest score across the three rounds and were awarded a box of new balls each to replace the numerous ones that they lost during the four rounds they played.

Congratulations must go to Mark Astell and his team who put this event together and managed to raise $7000. The funds will be split between two families with teenagers who are fighting cancer. Thanks, must also go to the sponsors who helped make this event such a great success.

Mark and his team are already planning a bigger and better fundraising golfing event for 2020 so keep an eye out for any announcements.
