From the Rough

August 20, 2019

Round three of the Battlescares golf tournament was played last Sunday and luckily the weather held out until after everyone had finished. Fifty-one players turned out to play the Greens Beach Golf Course and there were some great scores.

Daniel Templeton won round three with 41 points from Jack Love who scored 39 on his home course, and Geoff Johnstone from Longford got his second 3rd place of the tournament also on 39. The lowest scores of the day went to Matthew Hipwood from Mowbray and previous leader Zac Williams from Penguin with 20 points each.

The overall leader after three rounds is now Geoff Johnstone on 109 points with Jack Love in second place on 105 points with Daniel Templeton in third place on 104 points. These positions can all change at Quamby on September 1st with players able to drop their worst round. It will be interesting to see the effect on the final leader board.

Daylight Savings is only a couple of months away which means it's time for SEVENS GOLF at the Devonport Country Club for 2019/20. The Sevens format is a great game for busy working people and an excellent introduction for new players to the sport.

Sevens Golf is a weekly 9-hole stableford competition played by teams of seven in a round robin format. Each team will play every other team at least once. Players can play at any time during the week between Monday and Sunday outside scheduled competitions.

The team’s weekly score comprises the best four scores from the team with only one score per individual member counting towards the team aggregate total. Team members can play up to three games per week.

Weekly individual prizes include Winner, Runner Up and Vouchers for better scores, while season prizes are Team Winners and Runners Up and Female and Male Player of the Year and Most Reduced Handicap Awards.

Sevens will commence mid-October and registrations for teams and individuals can be made at the club during office hours. For any inquires phone 0412 713 308 or the Country Club on 6427 2381. Golfers from other clubs are welcome to enter.

Sheffield’s Craig Denney playing off an 11 handicap won the clubs single stableford competition recently with 37 points. His score included 4 wipes and 2 eagles. His first eagle came at the 305 meters 3rd hole after driving onto the first fairway, he then promptly played his second shot into the hole on the third green. He then drove the green on the 327 meter 8th hole following up with a successful short put for another eagle two. On the 425-meter par 5, 9th hole. Craig was on the green for two, narrowly missing a gettable putt (according to his playing partners) for what would have been his third eagle of the day. As a result, he cleaned out the eagle’s nest.
